Kaine downplays presidential readiness amid Clinton illness

ANN ARBOR, Michigan (AP) — Tim Kaine is downplaying the fact that he’d be one heartbeat away from the presidency if he and Hillary Clinton win the election in November.

The subject is a little awkward now that Clinton is recovering from a health scare. Video emerged of her slumping as she was helped into her motorcade Sunday. Clinton’s campaign later revealed that she is suffering from pneumonia and is taking a few days off the campaign trail to rest. A spokesman says she’s preparing to resume campaigning on Thursday. But the episode put new emphasis on Kaine’s readiness to become president — a topic he is not eager to discuss.

Instead, he’s is focusing on how Clinton’s energy “staggers” him — and what he says is Republican Donald Trump’s unfitness to be president.
