Prosecutors release video of moments before police shooting

ATLANTA (AP) — Authorities have released surveillance video they say shows the moments before a police officer shot a man outside the Atlanta Public Safety annex.

Authorities have said two plainclothes officers approached 24-year-old Deaundre Phillips on Jan. 26 as he was sitting in a car. They say he got out, talked to them and then lunged back into the car and tried to drive off.

Police have said Officer Yasin Abdulahad was partly in the car and shot Phillips as he tried to flee.

Chris Stewart, a lawyer for Phillips’ family, says the video shows the officer was entirely in the car and wasn’t being dragged.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard released the video Friday, saying in a statement he’s aware the footage may appear inconsistent with what was previously described.
