University of Dayton hires first VP for diversity, inclusion

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The University of Dayton has appointed its first vice president for diversity and inclusion.

The school announced Thursday that Lawrence Burnley will take over that role on July 1. He’s currently the chief diversity officer and associate vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington.

The university says Burnley will oversee the school’s efforts to create a more equitable and inclusive campus and workplace.

Eric Spina, the university’s president-designate, says campus officials are thrilled to have Burnley at the school and are confident he’ll be a partner and leader in pushing the university to become more diverse and inclusive.

Burnley is also an assistant professor of history at Whitworth. He’s also been an associate dean for multicultural programs at Messiah College in Pennsylvania.
