Ohio police shoot, kill man who hit officer with car

SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) — A suspect was shot and killed by police early Thursday after hitting a suburban Toledo officer with his car when police tried to detain him, authorities said.

One officer suffered a leg injury but was expected to recover. A second officer was evaluated at a hospital but not injured, police said.

The officer was in a driveway trying to detain 60-year-old Ed Holup when he was run down, said Ray Carroll, a deputy police chief in Sylvania Township.

Holup tried to hit the officer again and police began firing because they thought their lives were in danger, Carroll told WTOL-TV in Toledo.

A coroner said Holup, of Sylvania Township, died from a single shot to the chest.

The names of the officers were not immediately released.

Police said they were responding to a call from the home and that they were familiar with Holup and had been to the home in the past.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations is investigating the shooting.
