Gospel of Mark to be performed at First Presbyterian

Emmy Award winning actor Wayne S. Turney will perform the entire King James Version of The Gospel According to Saint Mark at First Presbyterian Church, 73 W. Winter St., Delaware, on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.

Staged by award winning director Harper Jane McAdoo, this two-hour program is more than a recitation. According to a press release, it is a unique blend of storytelling and drama. The performance is an opportunity to, in Turney’s words, “combine my profession with a profession of faith.”

Turney, a Delaware native and Ohio Wesleyan University graduate, brings the full range of his considerable dramatic talents to this role, traveling the country for nearly 25 years performing Mark in churches and theatres. Turney’s most recent appearance in Delaware was the role of Prospero in the OWU 2004 production of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.”

According to the press release, most Biblical scholars agree that Mark’s is the oldest of the four Gospels and was probably used by both Matthew and Luke when they composed their distinctive versions of Jesus’ life. But Mark’s Gospel is uniquely an oral document, which is to say that it was not carefully written down paying attention to niceties of style and form. It is rather an eye witness account, enlivened with seemingly extraneous details that make the story more “real.”

Perhaps a scribe was among Mark’s hearers one night. And that scribe came by afterwards with a transcription of what Mark had said. And that is what may well have come down to us as The Gospel According to Saint Mark.

There is no charge for the performance. The building is handicap accessible from the rear entrance off North Washington Street. For information, contact the church office at 740-363-1205, or Ruth Rabby at 740-369-3254.
