Paintings and pastels created by Marty J. Kalb, professor emeritus of fine arts Ohio Wesleyan University, were included in a group show of Ohio artists selected for an exhibition at the Ohio Governor’s Mansion in Columbus during the summer, fall and winter of 2017.

This loan program was initiated by First Lady Karen W. Kaisch and is administered by the Ohio Arts Council. A larger selection of Kalb’s paintings and drawings will be presented in a special “Spot Light “ exhibition at the governor’s residence in July and August 2018.

Additionally, at the governor’s residence in April 2018, artwork from Kalb’s Holocaust Series will be displayed in conjunction with a small memorial exhibition of work by Holocaust survivor and Columbus sculptor Alfred Tibor. Tibor, who died in 2017, created realistic, impressionistic art, inspired by his personal life story, that celebrated the survival of the human spirt in the face of evil.

A drawing from Kalb’s Holocaust Series, not included in the Columbus show in April, was recently acquired for the permanent collection of the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Georgia.

The charcoal drawing titled Selection, Warsaw Ghetto Round Up, based on a true event, depicts a group of Jewish men women and children lined up facing a brick wall with their hands raised. This drawing will be displayed in an exhibit of newly acquired art on paper at the Columbus Museum, Georgia, in summer 2018.

Kalb taught painting, drawing, and modern art history at Ohio Wesleyan from 1967 to 2007. During that time, he was honored with the university’s Daniel E. Anderson Campus and Community Conscience Award in 2004 and the Bishop Herbert Welch Meritorious Teaching Award in 2007. Kalb holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Yale University, and Master of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, California. His artwork is represented in numerous major museums in the United States and abroad.
