Berkshire Road repaired in Kingston

SUNBURY — Two sections of Berkshire Road were recently closed over a period of two weeks in Kingston Township.

Berkshire Road runs straight between North 3 B’s & K and North Galena roads in Kingston and goes over Interstate 71. As the name suggests, it borders the top of Berkshire Township. The Delaware County Engineer’s Office (DCEO) said it was closing Berkshire Road to replace two culverts. First was on the western section, which began the week of April 17. Part two was on the eastern section from April 24-27.

Previously, the DCEO closed Todd Street Road between North Galena and Clark roads in Kingston for a culvert replacement from March 20-31.

As reported earlier by The Gazette, there will also be chip sealing of Basham Lane, and asphalt paving of Twigg Hupp Road (2.14 miles in all) in Kingston Township. At a special Kingston Township Board of Trustees meeting on Jan. 19, Doug Riedel, of the DCEO, proposed repairs to the curve on Twigg Hupp ($5,500), grader patching on Basham Lane ($4,500) and chip sealing Cemetery Drive ($2,700). The trustees approved the $13,700 for the three projects.

“A proposal of $75,400 was presented for the same roads but is tabled until Ohio Public Works Commission funding is granted to pave the entire roads,” the minutes said. “If not granted then the repairs as quoted above will be made.”

At its organizational meeting on Jan. 3, William Shively was named trustees chairperson, Dewey Akers was named vice chairperson, and Matt Roy was named executive member. Department liaisons and county representatives were determined.

“It was suggested the annual joint road meeting be held in Feb. 2023 so resurface planning would be complete before the deadline for participation in the county resurface contract bidding,” said the organization meeting minutes. “Currently there were no written road agreements between Berkshire and Kingston townships for Berkshire Road; and no written agreement between Porter and Kingston Township for Beacom Road and Stockwell Road.”

At the regular trustees meeting on Jan. 3, under old business, the trustees okayed a “letter of appreciation to be sent to Chris Bauserman, Delaware County Engineer for their assistance in 2022, and recognizing Riedel as our township liaison for all his hard work and dedication in assisting Kingston Township with their road projects.”

Kingston now has 18.7 miles of roads, up from 17.93 the prior year.
