Balanced Pioneers cruise past Shamrocks

Cole Cahill tossed a complete game, Diego Astacio homered and Gabe Miller had a pair of hits to lead the Olentangy Orange baseball team to a convincing 9-1 OCC-Central Division win over Dublin Coffman Wednesday night in Lewis Center.

The Pioneers used a balanced attack to get the job done as seven different players knocked in runs. They scored early and often, too, jumping ahead 2-0 in the second thanks to back-to-back RBI singles off the bats of Keegan Knupp and Miller.

Orange only added to its edge the rest of the way, scoring a run in the third on Astacio’s solo blast, another in the fourth, three in the fifth and single tallies in the sixth and seventh to smooth out the scoring summary.

Tyler Fuller, James Wimsatt, Evan Eichel, and Jacob Lattig also knocked in runs.

Cahill and the defense took care of the rest. Cahill allowed nine hits, but, for the most part, was able to work around them. Coffman scratched a run across in the third to stay in it, but couldn’t get to Cahill the rest of the way. Cahill struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. The Pioneer defense, meanwhile, played errorless ball behind him.

Brady Broskie, Ethan Wendt and Jacob Ebling had two hits apiece to lead the Shamrocks while Adam Grzywinski suffered the setback on the mound, allowing seven runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Dublin Scioto 11, Big Walnut 2

The Golden Eagles fell into a 10-0 hole after one and never recovered, dropping an OCC showdown with the host Irish Wednesday night in Dublin.

Big Walnut got a run back in the second inning and another in the third, but couldn’t get any closer.

Eli Couser and Teddy Dancer led BW with two hits apiece.

Buckeye Valley 4, Grandview 2

Nathan Pierson doubled home what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh, and Evan Lang came up with an RBI single to add a little insurance as the Barons doubled up the host Bobcats Wednesday in Grandview.

Bryson Shumate also had a nice night, picking up the win on the mound while knocking in a pair from the plate to help his cause. Shumate allowed two runs on two hits while striking out 10 and walking just two in six strong innings.

Upper Arlington 8, Olentangy Liberty 5

The host Golden Bears scored four times in the first inning, parlaying the fast start into a league win over the Patriots Wednesday night in Upper Arlington.

Liberty got as close as two, 6-4, thanks to a three-run fifth, but couldn’t get any closer.

Brady Schnierer led the Patriots at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI.

SOFTBALL

Jayden Hamilton hit a first-inning grand slam and Liz Hamilton tossed a complete-game shutout as Buckeye Valley cruised past visiting Bexley, 11-0, in five innings Wednesday night in Delaware.

Jayden Hamilton’s smash capped a five-run first inning … and the Barons only added to their lead the rest of the way. BV scored two runs in the second, two more in the third and another two in the fourth to account for the final margin.

Jayden Hamilton finished 1-for-1 with the four RBI and a couple walks, Liz Hamilton was 3-for-3 with four RBI of her own and Sophia Richards scored a game-best two runs in the win.

Liz Hamilton took care of the rest from the circle, limiting the Lions to just two hits while striking out 10 in five stellar innings.
