SUNBURY — Last week, the Sunbury/Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual Community Expo on April 27. It was the 10th annual event, and the second in the new Big Walnut High School.

“This is an opportunity to meet local businesses and non-profits, some of which are hiring,” the chamber posted on Facebook in advance of the event. “The Athletic Boosters will be serving food at the concession stand and the high school will be hosting tennis, softball, baseball and girls’ lacrosse. In addition, we will have vocalists and dancers from The Lex Center.”

The City of Sunbury has started a program called “It’s Always Sunny on the Square.” For the first episode, Mayor Joe St. John spoke at the Community Library. The show can be viewed on the chamber or city’s Facebook pages.

“Welcome to your show!” said the post. “We sit down with local leaders to share the best of our community, important announcements, interesting history, and future plans.”

This Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon there will be a fishing derby at the Sunbury Upground Reservoirs, 250 Rainbow Ave. Sunbury Christian Church is putting on the family event.

“Ages 15 and under can fish for free. Rain or shine,” said the announcement. “Hotdogs, chips and water for the family; poles, tackle and bait are available if needed; parking lot at Rainbow Avenue; restrooms will be available on site; bring a lawn chair and come enjoy a free day on the (reservoirs) with your family.”

Another fishing derby at the reservoirs is slated for June 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is being sponsored by the Big Walnut Conservation Club.

Also from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday on the town square is the Farmers Market, presented by the Big Walnut Civic Association. These will take place every Saturday through September.

Also on the square is the Memorial Day Flea Market, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 29, presented by the Big Walnut Band Boosters.

The “Movies on the Square” series has just been announced by the Civic Association: Minions: The Rise of Gru (June 2); Top Gun: Maverick (July 7); Moana (Aug. 4). The movies start at dusk, with concessions available for purchase. Bringing blankets or lawn chairs is recommended.

Last but not least, a “peace pole” was installed alongside the new high school by local Boy Scout Garrett Osbourne, for his Eagle Scout Project. The pole says “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in English and several other languages. Osbourne and his family and friends, Big Walnut district staff, elected officials, chamber and Civic Association members, along with the Sunbury-Galena Rotary Club, were on hand for a ceremony to mark the occasion.
