COLUMBUS — State Sen. Andrew Brenner (R-Delaware) honored the Olentangy Liberty boys ice hockey team in the Ohio Senate on April 26 for winning the 2023 state championship. The team beat Hunting Valley University School by a score of 6-2 in the OHSAA Ice Hockey State Championship at Nationwide Arena. It was Olentangy Liberty’s first state title, and the school became the first from central Ohio to ever win the state championship.
“The first school from Columbus to become state ice hockey champs in the 46 years of this tournament, what a milestone achievement,” said Brenner. “It just shows, great things happen when you work as a team and try your hardest.”
Brenner also honored Olentangy Liberty senior Dylan Russo for winning his third straight state title in wrestling. He is the first wrestler in program history to do so. Russo dominated, preventing his opponent from scoring a single offensive point in the Division I 215-pound championship final.
“Dylan said he wanted to make a statement and leave no doubt about his place in the sport, and he certainly did that,” said Brenner. “We’re all very proud of him.”
Russo’s success runs in the family. His grandfather was a state championship wrestler in 1950.
Sen. Brenner represents the 19th Ohio Senate District, which encompasses all of Coshocton, Delaware, Holmes, and Knox counties. Learn more at www.OhioSenate.gov/Brenner.
