‘A year of firsts’ in Brown Twp.

Brown Township’s Spring Newsletter noted that “it’s been a year of firsts.”

Perhaps most obvious is that “the township has our first roundabout on State Route 521 and the new Byxbe Parkway,” the newsletter said.

This is because Delaware County “is remodeling the retired (north) Delaware Area Career Center campus to be able to move several county agencies to one site making them more of a one-stop county facility to make it more convenient for county residents.”

Also, “the Delaware County Sheriff is building a new office at the Byxbe complex. Both of these will be opening later this summer. This area adjoins the property where the new fire station is being built. It will be rededicated in May.”

In another first, “the township also has it’s first annexation,” the newsletter said. “This area is west of the new fire station on Bowtown Road. Half of the annexed territory is in Brown and the other half is part of Delaware Township.”

Finally, “the township has purchased eight acres to expand the park. The new property is north of Mulberry Street and has frontage on North Old State Road.

The newsletter also said the trustees are sponsoring “Clean-up Brown Township Days” in which residents can receive a trash voucher that will be good for disposing up to a ton of trash from a household in May.

Also being cleaned up are trees.

“While out inspecting roads this spring we notice some of the trees along the township roads are dead and need be cut down,” Trustee Charlie Miley wrote. “If you have one of these trees, please check into removing it. It becomes a hazard at 2 a.m. when our road superintendent or the fire department has to go out and cut up a tree blocking the road, so it is easier to take care of this in the daylight.”

Miley said Main, Pearl and White streets in Kilbourne will be chip and fog sealed this summer.

During the Oxford Township Board of Trustees meeting on March 14, the minutes said:

“The township line on McCurdy Road is in the middle of an s-curve with Brown Township. Doug Riedel (of the Delaware County Engineer’s Office) was informed by Brown Township that they would like to replace the safety signs for the curve and asked if we would be willing to do the same on the Oxford Township side. …After further discussion it was decided upon to replace the curve signs and Doug will coordinate between Brown Township and Oxford Township on the replacement.”

Also in Brown Township, Pittman Road, which was closed between U.S. Highway 42 North and Leonardsburg Road for a culvert replacement, reopened last month.
