Junior forward Ava Bruns scored with 4:41 to play to give the Ohio Wesleyan women’s soccer team a 1-0 non-conference win over Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday in Berea.
Junior midfielder Tiffany Trinh had the first scoring chance of the game, but Yellow Jacket keeper Darcy Schoen was there for the save in the fifth minute.
BW’s Ella James had a look in the seventh minute, but junior goalkeeper Natalie Ryan made the save.
Schoen stopped 4 more shots as the first half ended in a scoreless tie, and 2 more saves during the second half.
Bruns’ goal came off a feed from Trinh in the 86th minute.
Baldwin Wallace’s Sydney Rice had a look at the equalizer in the 87th minute, but the shot went wide.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Baldwin Wallace, 15-12. Ryan finished with 3 saves in the Bishop goal.
MEN’S SOCCER
Senior forward Franklin Rodriguez staked Ohio Wesleyan to a 1-0 lead, but John Carroll scored during the closing seconds of the first half and the teams went on to a 1-1 tie in non-conference action on Wednesday in University Heights.
Rodriguez rang up an unassisted goal midway through the first half to put the Bishops ahead.
Senior midfielder Drew Doza had a look in the 34th minute, but JCU’s Dominic Grobler made the save.
The hosts pulled even on Nicholas Graeca’s goal with :04 remaining in the first half.
Ryan Betts had the first scoring chance of the second half, but his shot was stopped by Grobler in the 49th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Whitman protected the deadlock with 5 saves during the second half, the last of which was on a penalty kick by Graeca with 15:23 left in the contest.
John Carroll outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 19-7. Whitman recorded 9 saves in the Bishop goal.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Freshman Audrey Nichols led Ohio Wesleyan at the Donald Ross Invite, hosted by John Carroll University last weekend at Manakiki Golf Course in Willoughby, and on Monday at Shaker Heights Country Club in Shaker Heights.
Ohio Northern won the tournament with a 36-hole total of 654, finishing 9 strokes ahead of Mount Union. Wittenberg finished third with a 666, followed by Otterbein (672), followed by Ohio Wesleyan (764), Allegheny (771), Marietta (782), John Carroll (793), and Capital (821).
Ohio Northern’s Marissa Alfes won medalist honors with a 156, defeating Mount Union’s Jocelyn Troyer by a single shot.
Nichols finished 20th among individuals with a 176.
Freshman Lexi Rush placed 25th place at 184, freshman Isabella Gales was 32nd with a 200, freshman Angela Soellner finished 34th at 204, and senior Lily Davis was 40th place with a 224.
MEN’S GOLF
Junior Gavin Stutz led Ohio Wesleyan at the Donald Ross Invite, hosted by John Carroll University and Shaker Heights Country Club.
John Carroll won the tournament with a 36-hole total of 598. Otterbein finished second with a 611, followed by Wittenberg (617), Ohio Northern (619), Mount Union (627), Marietta (635), Ohio Wesleyan (645), and Capital (647).
John Carroll’s Daniel Donahue won medalist honors on the second hole of a playoff against Mount Union’s Brian Myers after each finished with a 145.
Stutz finished 27th among individuals with a 36-hole total of 159.
Senior Chris Whelton tied for 29th with a 161, freshman Gavin Clark tied for 33rd with a 163, freshman Daniel Golin tied for 35th with a 165, and senior Isaac Henry was 42nd with a 167.
