Letter: Reasons why GOP is pushing Issue 1

0

On Aug. 8, Ohioans are being asked to vote on an anti-democratic scheme that would help negate protections for women who wish to make informed reproductive health care decisions without interference from the state. Issue 1, if passed by a simple majority vote, would require any future amendments to pass with a newly imposed 60% margin. There are two primary reasons the GOP is giving for seeking this change.

Letter: Majority rule could disappear

Ohio voters are being asked to give up majority rule. The official polling day is Aug. 8, but early voting has already begun.

Differences between traditional, contemporary worship

0

One of the differences among believers nowadays is between traditional and contemporary worship. My suspicion is that musical style is what most people think about when they hear those terms. There are, however, other features, like building architecture and setting.

Residents prefer rural. I couldn’t agree more with the comments collected in the survey from Kingston Township residents. While I am not a resident of Kingston Township, I am a resident of a quickly waning “rural” Delaware County area.

Getting rid of ‘stupid grass’

I’m old enough to remember when the “Weed Eater” first appeared on the landscape scene. As a landscape gardener I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. I could manicure lawn grass in rough and hard-to-reach areas like roadside ditches and around utility poles, fence posts and fire hydrants with ease. Landscapers embraced this breakthrough invention, and eventually every homeowner had one.

Letter: Freedom, free are two separate things

At June’s First Friday observance, I stopped by the Delaware Republicans’ booth and explained that in the past I have held many of their party in high regard but as of late, I’ve found their adoption of the tagline “Got Freedom Yet” to be remarkably cynical and off-putting. I engaged in what I had hoped would be a rational discussion about the irony of that slogan, given that theirs is the party of restrictions concerning women’s reproductive rights and an increased series of attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

Unfair foreign competition is a massive problem for Ohio companies, particularly from countries like China, where the government much of the economy.

Retaining walls that last — It’s in the ‘batter’

0

It’s tragic to spend the time and money to build a retaining wall only to have it fail. Unstable walls can be dangerous; at the very least they are a discouraging waste of resources. Over the years we’ve seen far too many of these “hardscape fails”, and they have certain things in common. Here’s how to avoid some of the most frequent mistakes.

Computer science education must start early

We all want Ohio to be the best it can be. To make our state the most enjoyable place in which to live, we must first focus on its economy and, as a result, its workforce.

Letter: ‘It’s the dawn of another age’

I read Mr. Christopher Acker’s letter of 5/20/23 (‘The world turned upside down’), and I felt sorry for him. Imagine living in a time when his country is “dying due to the actions of the progressive, socialist, communists trying to overthrow our nation.” It must be tough knowing our destruction is being caused by boys and girls not using the restrooms that Mr. Acker has determined are appropriate for them.
