OWU announces April calendar

Ohio Wesleyan University has announced its April 2016 lineup of public events.

Unless otherwise noted, admission is free.

• March 21 through Sept. 21, with April 7 artist talk – “Crystal Synergy: The Confluence of Science and Human Imagination,” featuring abstract art created by 1966 Ohio Wesleyan graduate Thomas “T.H.” Saunders by growing and photographing microscopic crystal structures made from wine, coffee and aspirin – and other materials. Saunders’ exhibit will be showcased in two OWU venues: Alumni Gallery, inside Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., and the Gallery 2001, inside Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland. At 4:10 p.m. April 7, Saunders will present an illustrated artist talk in the library’s second-floor Bayley Room, with a reception immediately following in Gallery 2001.

• 7 p.m. April 1 – OWU student recital featuring Allison Dawson, soprano; ZoAnn Schutte, clarinet; and Brooke Waite, flute, in Jemison Auditorium inside Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St.

• 7 p.m. April 1 – OWU Tournées French Film Festival screening of “Girlhood.” The screening will be in Benes Room B of OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland. OWU students Ornella Bisamaza, Onyinye Okoli and Victor Soder will introduce the film.

• 8 p.m. April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 – Evening programs at OWU’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23). Content varies based on sky conditions, but may include a planetarium show, observatory tours and star gazing with the 32-inch Schottland Telescope. Advance tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for children and senior citizens. Reserve tickets by calling 740-363-1257.

• April 2 and 3 – OWU men’s golf hosts the two-day Strimer Memorial Invitational, at Oakhaven Golf Club, 2871 U.S. 23 N.

• 1 p.m. April 2 – OWU softball double header vs. Wittenberg, at Margaret Sagan Field, 251 S. Henry St.

• 7 p.m. April 2 – Ohio Wesleyan’s Sisters United student group presents the play “Butterfly Confessions” and Tamara Winfrey Harris, author of “The Sisters are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative for Black Women in America,” facilitates a community dialogue about issues impacting today’s women of color, in the Studio Theatre inside Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave. The play contains adult content and is intended for mature audiences. After the dialogue, Winfrey Harris will sign copies of her book, which will be available for purchase on site.

• 10 a.m. April 3 – OWU men’s tennis vs. Allegheny, at Luttinger Family Tennis Center, 31 Hayes St.

• 3:15 p.m. April 3 – Ohio Wesleyan Choral Art Society concert, conducted by Jason Hiester, in Gray Chapel.

• 7 p.m. April 4 – OWU Tournées French Film Festival screening of “Li’l Quinquin.” The screening will be held in Benes Room B. OWU student Julia Stone will introduce the film.

• 3:15 p.m. April 5 – OWU student vocal recital featuring Catie Kocian, Katie Miller, Melody Smith and Pat Tang, in Jemison Auditorium.

• 7 p.m. April 5 – OWU men’s lacrosse vs. Wittenberg, at Selby Stadium, 45 S. Henry St. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an Ohio Wesleyan ID.

• 9:15 p.m. April 5 and 7 p.m. April 6 – Community Film Series screening of “7 Boxes” at The Strand Theatre, 28 E. Winter St. Tickets are $6.50 for general admission and $5.50 for students with valid student IDs.

• 3:15 p.m. April 7 – OWU student recital featuring Alescia Austin, viola; Alyssa Clark, voice; Toby Phongmekin, violin; and Rachel Ward, clarinet, in Jemison Auditorium.

• 4:10 p.m. April 7 — Jennifer Hellmann, doctoral candidate at The Ohio State University, discusses, “Neighbor Effects: The Influence of Colony-Level Social Structure on Within-Group Dynamics in a Social Fish,” in Room 163 of Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St.

• 7 p.m. April 7 – Writer, poet, playwright and activist Sonia Sanchez will read poetry and sign books, in the Benes Rooms of OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center.

• 4 p.m. April 8 – OWU men’s tennis vs. Rose-Hulman, at Luttinger Family Tennis Center.

• 6:30 p.m. April 8 – OWU women’s lacrosse vs. Wooster, at Selby Stadium. Tickets are $10 for adults, $3 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an Ohio Wesleyan ID.

• 7 p.m. April 8 – OWU Tournées French Film Festival screening of “Farewell, My Queen” in Room 301 of OWU’s Merrick Hall, 65 S. Sandusky St. OWU students Caroline Anderson, Jessica Sanford and Meg Teitelman will introduce the film.

• 8 p.m. April 8, 9, 15 and 16; 2 p.m. April 17 – “Red Hot & Cole,” a musical revue of the life and music of Cole Porter, on the Main Stage inside Chappelear Drama Center. The revue is being co-produced by OWU’s Departments of Music and Theatre & Dance with stage direction by Elane Denny-Todd and music direction by Jason Hiester. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens, Ohio Wesleyan employees, and non-Ohio Wesleyan students. Admission is free for OWU students with a valid university ID. • April 9 – OWU track & field hosts the Marv Frye Invitational, at the George Gauthier Track inside Selby Stadium.

• 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. April 9 – “Powerful Women Paving the Way,” featuring back-to-back panel discussions on “Women in Finance” (1:30 p.m.) and “Women in Entrepreneurship” (2:45 p.m.), followed by networking and mingling, in the Benes Rooms inside OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center. This first-time event is sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan’s Department of Economics; Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship; Office of Alumni Relations and Parents Council; and Office of Career Services.
