Ashley man still in hospital after shooting

An Ashley man was still being treated in an area hospital Thursday after being shot in the face Tuesday night by his girlfriend’s ex-husband.

Jeffrey Shilt, 39, was alive and recovering at a central Ohio hospital after being shot in the left jaw about 11 p.m. Tuesday.

He was shot by his girlfriend’s ex-husband, Christopher Robin Sidders, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office has alleged. Shilt had been listed in critical condition initially. Hospital officials Thursday declined to provide an update on his medical condition.

Deputies said it is policy not to give out the location of shooting victims for their safety.

Sidders, 41, allegedly shot Shilt at a home located at 9 N. Franklin St., Ashley. Assistant Delaware County Prosecutor Cory Goe said Sidders was staying with his ex-wife, Teresa Rogers, and Shilt at the time of the shooting.

Goe said Sidders was trying to rekindle his relationship with Rogers.

Sidders appeared in Delaware Municipal Court via video conferencing Wednesday morning where Municipal Judge Marianne Hemmeter said that Sidders is charged with one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, with two specifications — that Sidders is a repeat violent offender and that he used a firearm to commit the crime.

Hemmeter set Sidders’ bond at $250,000 and stipulated he must pay the full amount, not the usual 10 percent.

Hemmeter told Sidders that he could face two to eight years in prison, if he is convicted on the felonious assault charge. She added that the firearm specification would add a mandatory three years to any sentence Sidders could receive and the repeat violent offender specification would add 10 years in prison to any sentence.

According to Goe, when Delaware County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the house, Sidders denied any involvement, but later admitted to parts of the shooting. He was then arrested and charged with felonious assault.

Goe said Sidders has a criminal record in Delaware County that includes drug trafficking charges, domestic violence and a felony burglary conviction from 2007.

Goe said the repeat violent offender specification stems from a burglary conviction.

Sidders said he was not a violent person and had never been convicted of burglary. Hemmeter said he can contest the specification at a later date.

Records of the Delaware County Clerk of Courts Office state Sidders was ordered to serve 18 months in prison after a jury found him guilty of burglary.

Sidders was in the county jail Thursday.
