Two noteworthy events are taking place this week at Delaware City Hall that the public may attend: a reception for the parks and natural resources director candidates; and consideration of final plans for a Speedway gas station.
First up is a reception for the three candidates from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today, April 4, in council chambers, 1 S. Sandusky St. The finalists are:
• Douglas A. Burger, of Guilford, Indiana. Burger’s most recent position was as parks service director for Great Parks of Hamilton County in Cincinnati. He has a degree in turf-grass management and landscape design from Eastern Kentucky University.
• Ted Clifford Miller, of Waldo. Miller is chief landscape architect for Preservation Parks of Delaware County. He has a degree in landscape architecture from Ohio State University.
• Gregory Todd Younkin, of Upper Arlington. Younkin is resource planning manager at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Watercraft. He has a degree in natural resources parks and recreation administration.
A total of 56 people applied for the job, a full-time position that was approved by City Council and budgeted for 2016. For the last couple of years, the city has has had a parks supervisor, while the YMCA has taken over the recreation side. City staff have said they want a director to manage not only the parks, but the city’s natural resources, as well.
On Wednesday, the city’s planning commission will go over six requests that the public may comment on.
• First is changing the zoning code to help the owners of non-conforming single-family houses to sell or refinance.
• The second item is a rezoning amendment for Innovation Business Park to allow a retail use on the 47.5-acre site’s southwestern-most lot.
• The third item is a request for a temporary outdoor patio for Shorty’s Casual Cuisine at 554 W. Central Ave.
• The fourth item is are subdivision plats for sections 2 and 3 of Belmont Place on 49 lots.
• The fifth item is a final development plan for a 40,000-square-foot addition to Midwest Acoust-A-Fiber at 759 Pittsburgh Drive .
• Last is Speedway’s final development plan for a 4,608-square-foot gas station and convenience store on about 13 acres at the northwest corner of U.S. 23 North and Hills Miller Road on property that is zoned as a general business district. Some residents in the area have expressed concerns about trucks using the station.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., but the Speedway case is not expected to start until at least 7:45 p.m.
