Delaware emergency personnel rescued two men who were buried after a trench collapsed at a housing project Tuesday afternoon in Radnor Township.

Delaware Emergency Medical Services officials said Tuesday that at 12:51 p.m. they were dispatched to a collapsed trench at a housing project located at 2633 River Road.

Two medical helicopters were forced to land in an empty lot adjacent to the housing project.

Officials said two men had been working in the trench when the sidewall collapsed and buried the men in dirt. Officials said one man was buried up to his waist and the other was buried up to his chest.

Emergency units arrived shortly thereafter and began digging the men out.

EMS Captain Bob Fish said rescue units had to re-enforce the walls as they dug the men out in order to prevent further collapse.

The man who was buried to his waist was retrieved rather quickly because he wasn’t buried as deeply, Fish said. The man was taken to OSU Wexner Medical Center via helicopter at 1:47 p.m. Police scanner traffic indicates the man was 33 and was alert and oriented when he was taken from the scene.

The other man was rescued at 2:13 p.m. and was also taken to OSU Wexner via helicopter.

Officials could not provide the names of the men Tuesday but said they were both alive when they left the scene.

“Things went really well,” Fish said after the second man was rescued.

Units from the Radnor Township Fire Department, Tri-Township Fire Department, Scioto Township Fire and Delaware City’s Trench Rescue Unit were all involved in the operation.

Rescuers cleared the scene around 3 p.m. and River Road was reopened.
