Two positions abolished in sanitary department

Delaware County commissioners will consider eliminating two jobs in the county’s sanitary engineering department today.

The action is being considered in an effort to streamline and improve efficiency in the department, according to county officials.

The positions of lead project engineer and lead project engineer II are to be abolished.

County commissioners today will vote on a resolution to adopt a “statement of rationale for layoffs and the abolishment” of the two positions, according to the meeting agenda.

Commissioners will meet their hearing room today at 9:30 a.m. in the county commission building, 101 N. Sandusky St.

Commissioners have asked the director of sanitary engineering and development to improve the approval process, increase communication, offer proactive resolutions, improve coordination and continue improvement of data management techniques and implementation of the master plan, according to the proposed resolution.

Because the county manages the sanitary engineering department and because the positions are being abolished due to a reorganization, state law requires county commissioners to adopt a “statement of rationale.”

“The Ohio Revised Code and administrative code requires this process with an employee in the classified civil service whose job is being abolished for the efficient operation of the department,” according to Dawn Huston, assistant county administrator and director of administrative services.

The area of improvement will focus on the work performed by the engineering staff of the Channing Street office. The current organization of the office includes two lead project engineers and six staff engineers.

It’s normal procedure for new leadership to make changes in a department to streamline and improve operations, county officials said. “In the case of our sanitary engineering department, that includes a restructuring that will eliminate two positions,” according to Jane Hawes, the county’s communication and employees relations manager.

Reorganizing the office structure will facilitate the reporting structure and increase efficiency in operations, officials said. “It should be noted that both individuals currently filling those positions have been offered new positions within the department at the same salaries,” Hawes said.

The layoffs of the two individuals and the positions that are to be abolished will be effective April 22.
