Get children vaccinated, says health district

The Delaware General Health District is urging parents to have their children vaccinated before they go back to school.

“Getting children all of the vaccines recommended by (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s) immunization schedule is one of the most important things parents can do to ensure a healthy future for their child,” said Joan Bowe, director of personal health for the local health district. “If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to check with your doctor to find out what vaccines your child still needs.”

Vaccines protect against a number of serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, according to district officials. When children are not vaccinated, officials say, children are at increased risk and can also spread diseases to others in their classrooms and community – including babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated, and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer or other health conditions.

Health district officials say they encourage parents to talk to their child’s doctor to find out which vaccines are recommended for them before going back to school. Parents can find out more about the recommended vaccines or view a schedule of the district’s clinic hours by visiting the health district’s website at DelawareHealth.org or by calling 740-203-2040.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month.
