City removing last 2 dams

The city of Delaware will be removing two Olentangy River lowhead dams located near the U.S. 23-Stratford Road intersection next week.

Removal of the dams, located just north of the U.S. 23 bridge, is scheduled to begin Monday and will take about a week to complete.

The work will improve the natural water flow, help restore an impounded segment of the Olentangy State Scenic River and improve in-stream-habitat, city officials said.

Removing the two dams will cost $70,000 and is being paid for with an Ohio EPA grant. These are the final two lowhead dams located within city limits, officials said. The city has removed four other lowhead dams since 2005.

The concrete structures are about 200 feet long, four feet high and three feet wide. The removal will be accomplished by breaking the dams into pieces. Debris generated by the demolition will be hauled off site.
