Fire and water will be part of Delaware City Council’s meeting tonight.

In legislative matters, council will decide whether to accept a settlement of a collective bargaining agreement with its firefighters.

An arbitrator has heard unresolved issues by the city and the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 606. He ruled in favor of the firefighters, awarding them 2 percent wage increases each year for three years.

“While this decision is binding, staff recommends council accept the award,” states a council fact sheet. “This will create a clear record adopting the contract.”

Also on the agenda is a presentation on the city’s advanced metering infrastructure project from public utilities director Brad Stanton.

“Through AMI, a small battery-powered transmitter is connected to your water meter,” states the city’s annual water quality report. “The transmitter will read the meter and send a brief, low-powered radio signal to a nearby collector. Collectors then transmit meter reads to the city’s utility billing office, eliminating the need for manual meter readings.”

Council has agreed to staff’s recommendations to purchase water meter reading equipment to keep more accurate records on water usage, and to detect if homes have leaks. After a vendor search, Mueller’s AMI equipment was chosen.

“Before I executed the contract documents, I wanted to provide council with a presentation on how the project implementation will work, who the project team will be and what the city’s water customer can expect over the next 12-18 months,” Stanton writes.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the second floor of City Hall, 1 S. Sandusky St. Although there are no public hearings, the public may attend and comment on anything not on the agenda.
