Ashley gets new storm warning siren

The village of Ashley now has a new outdoor warning siren.

The Delaware County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management recently announced that Ashley would get the siren, purchased with a Community Development Block Grant in collaboration with the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency, and Delaware County Economic Development.

Ashley, with a population of more than 1,300, is about 15 miles north and slightly west of Sunbury. The siren is located on Harrison Street near Taylor Street in Ashley and will be activated by Delaware County emergency communications.

In a recent press release, Delaware County EMA Director Sean Miller said the county 911 office would test the new siren on the first Saturday of each month.

“Delaware County EMA is pleased to have facilitated this outdoor warning siren to replace the village of Ashley’s aging fire siren,” Miller said. “This siren should have a larger warning radius and will be used for severe weather.”

Outdoor warning sirens are designed to be heard outdoors, Miller said; he recommends that all county residents sign up for CodeRED weather warning and have a NOAA all-hazards radio in the home as an alert to impending severe weather while indoors.

“Text and email alerts from reliable sources are also great resources as they can be used indoors, outdoors, or while traveling,” Miller added. For more information on communication in an emergency, visit the Delaware County EMA website at delcoema.org.
