Big Walnut Intermediate School fifth-grade teacher Rina Hoge said the school’s fifth- and sixth-grade students had a “superior day” at the May 14 State Science Day at OSU’s French Field House – literally.
“Nine out of our 13 Big Walnut Intermediate School students earned a superior at State Science Day,” Hoge said. “The fifth-graders were filled with excitement and anticipation because they had never been there before.”
Hoge said the sixth-graders returning to State Science Day for their second year helped calm the fears of the fifth-grade novices.”
“The fifth-graders had such a good time that they’re ready and excited about doing projects so they can return next year,” Hoge said. “They can’t wait to do it again.”
Hoge said the school district also had an excellent day at State Science Day.
“Big Walnut High School students Abbie and Faith Myers and Madison Alshire Superiors, and Jaden Partlow at Big Walnut Middle School got a superior,” Hoge said.
Big Walnut High School biology and Advanced Placement environmental science teacher Matt “Wally” Wallschlaeger, who directs the school district’s science fair, said Abbie was awarded a seven-year participation plaque for having attended State Science Day each year for the past seven years.
“Abbie has been to State Science Day since she’s been in fifth grade, and she has earned a superior each year,” Wallschlaeger said. “She was one of only two students recognized for this achievement in the state.”
Wallschlaeger said that in addition to earning a superior and sponsored awards, Faith Myers earned a five-year participation plaque for having attended each of the past five years.
“Faith also has earned superiors each of those years since fifth grade,” Wallschlaeger said.
Wallschlaeger said Alshire has attended State Science Day at least three times, and this year received a $200 award for her work.
