Looking for something to do on Father’s Day? Among the events happening in Delaware is the inaugural “Strawberry Festival” at the Delaware County Community Market, from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday on 222 E. William St.
“We’ve had an end of the farmers market festival for years, and an autumn harvest festival, so this year we created a kick-off event,” said market manager Bob Sullivan-Neer.
Quarts of strawberries, strawberry shortcake, and possibly other strawberry-themed products will be sold.
“God willing, there are still strawberries,” Sullivan-Neer said. “They’re just starting last week, next week and hopefully next week. We’ll be asking vendors to join us and sell baked goods with strawberries, along with regular fair stuff.”
Free hot dogs will be given to dads, and children’s games like Plinko and miniature golf will be available.
Also taking place from noon to 3 p.m. will be the first Eastside Farmers Market of the season. Sullivan-Neer said it isn’t as busy as the downtown farmers market on Saturdays, because some of the vendors don’t want to work both weekend events.
“We have it after church,” he said. “We’re always trying to recruit more people.”
The festival is free, and parking will be available in the back. In the back is also a community garden, with 70 beds. Some plots out front are used by the Master Gardeners program.
“We’ve got the biggest community garden in town, and there are still some plots available back there,” Sullivan-Neer said.
The market will also be open, selling deli items, baked goods, local produce and local groceries such as salsa and honey.
Sullivan-Neer said the non-profit market is doing well, thanks to its catering efforts. In addition, a patio was built out front, and bigger tables with umbrellas are on the way.
“We’re signing up more customers every day, and we’re hoping for good weather on Father’s Day,” he said.
