House demolished as Smith work begins

An excavator piles up debris near the edge of the Smith Elementary School playground Tuesday afternoon as work on Smith’s additional wing continues. Previously, a line of trees and a house on West Heffner Street stood on the adjacent lot and was demolished recently to make way for the school’s addition — after the Delaware City School District bought the home and lot last year. The addition will add a new gym and several classrooms. It is expected to be completed by the start of the 2017-18 school year.
