For 21 years, members of the Sunbury Galena Rotary Club held a cruise-in as a fundraiser. Last year the Rotary decided not to hold the event, but members of the Bry-Air Relay For Life team stepped up to sponsor the popular gathering of classic car and hot rod aficionados.

Change, whether it’s the event name or location, is comfortable for Big Walnut area folks, as long as the core business remains the same. This year the Sunday, Sept. 27, “ACS Sunbury Relay For Life Country Cruise-In” is moving to Sunbury’s Kroger Plaza, but will still feature all models of classic cars, trucks and street rods; and cruise-in organizers will hand out a host of trophies, including the coveted Best of Show award.

“This had been the Sunbury-Galena cruise-in for many years, but last year and this year 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society, Sunbury Relay For Life,” said one of the event organizers, Donna Evans. “There will be special entertainment throughout the day; and the Big Walnut Grill, Jet’s Pizza and New China Express will be open for business.”

Evans also said that Croton’s own Roger Bishop, of Hyper Sounds Entertainment, will spin classic tunes throughout the day, making it a fun afternoon for the entire family.

Evans said there would be awards for Favorite 60 plus Best Of Show, Car, Truck, Street Rod, Most Original Unrestored, and Sponsor’s Choice.

New this year will be the Nationwide Insurance NASCAR Race Team Car and the Nationwide team’s race simulator on-site. Evans said the simulator would be open and available for folks to sit in the driver’s seat and test their race driving skills.

Got a project car? Finished or in progress? Dust it off, polish it up, and be at the Kroger Plaza in Sunbury between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to register. The cost is $10 per vehicle. The show ends at about 4 p.m. following an awards ceremony.

Evans said Nationwide Insurance agent Marla Evans is sponsoring the 2015 ACS Sunbury Relay For Life Country Cruise-In. There’s no charge for spectators.

This Corvette was originally sold new in 1954 with a straight-6 engine, but that was no longer under the hood when owner Steve Kidwell brought it to last year’s ACS Relay Cruise-In. The paper work said: LS1, 700 R-4, Tube Frame, Coil Over. Asked what he would sell it for, Kidwell said a hundred – grand that is. Kidwell said the only reason he would sell the Arrest Me Red ’Vette for a measly $100K was another ’54 was out there he wanted to buy and he needed some pocket change. The interesting thing is, when this car was on the market in 1954, dealers couldn’t give them away; Chevrolet had to drop the base price from $3,498 to $2,774.
