‘Big Nut Strut’ signups open

This year’s Oct. 4 Big Nut Strut in Sunbury might be almost a month out, but race organizers recently announced that early registrations are underway at RunSignup.com.

The Big Nut Strut is a five-kilometer (3.1 miles) family-friendly run/walk that benefits district elementary school PTOs, helping them pay for activities that fall outside normal curriculum funding.

The 2015 Big Nut Strut will be managed with all online registrations. Paper registrations will only be accepted on race day, and during early packet pickup from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Sunbury Chiropractic Center, 123 State Route 3 in Sunbury Mills Plaza.

The online and race-day registration fee is $30 plus a $3.20 signup fee. The fee for those 13 and under is $20. The one-mile walk registration fee is $30 plus the signup fee; 13 and under is $20. Online registrations will be accepted until 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

Big Nut Strut’s home base will be the General Rosecrans Elementary School staff parking lot, accessed off of Fairland Drive – 301 S. Miller Drive in Sunbury. Race participants will not use any main roadways other than a brief stretch of Fairland Drive.

All registered participants will receive a race T-shirt and finish-line refreshments. You must pre-register by Sept. 18 to be guaranteed a T-shirt on race day. Big Nut Strut is also giving participants the opportunity to get their name or a fun nickname on their bib number, but they must pre-register by Sept. 18 to get their name on a bib.

Awards will be given to the top male and female in 14 age groups from 6 and under through 60-plus: 6 and under, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+.

Registration begins at General Rosecrans Elementary School at 12:30 p.m. on race day; the 5K run/walk and 1-mile walk begin at 2 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. award ceremony.

BNS race organizers are always are looking for donations, sponsors and race day volunteers. The sixth annual Big Nut Strut proceeds will benefit Big Walnut Elementary, General Rosecrans Elementary, Harrison Street Elementary and Hylen Souders Elementary schools.
