Delaware County moves forward with road projects

Delaware County commissioners on Monday approved the purchase of five pieces of property necessary for a nearly $2 million road project.

Commissioners unanimously approved the five land transactions – totaling $26,330 – that will make way for improvements to Home and Steitz roads.

The project includes the widening of Home Road to three lanes and the addition of turn lanes at Steitz Road.

A small portion of Steitz Road will also be widened.

The project will require a 30-day closure of Steitz Road, north of Home Road. One lane of traffic will be maintained on Home Road throughout construction.

Commissioners also approved a measure that will allow the county to apply for an Ohio Public Works Commission grant to help pay for the cost of improvements to the Worthington Road intersection with Big Walnut Road.

The grant, if approved, will cover $490,000 worth of the $2.5 million project.

The project, set to begin next year, will add turn lanes and a traffic signal to the intersection.

The north and east legs of the intersection will be closed for 45 days during construction, followed by a 45-day closure of the south and west legs of the intersection.

Also as part of the project, the county plans to realign a portion of a sharp curve in Big Walnut Road, east of the intersection.

Commissioners also approved a $469,800 contract with Double Z Construction to repair two bridges: one on Patrick Road and the other on Miller-Paul Road.

“They do good work,” said Rob Riley, the county’s chief deputy engineer.
