Delaware County Fair — Junior Fair preview

0

The biggest change at this year’s Delaware County Junior Fair is because of the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s ban on poultry shows to protect the state from avian flu.

“We are doing what most fairs are doing,” said 4-H administrator Laryssa Hook. “There’s still a show, but the kids will be exhibiting and talking about their bird through posters, so they’ll still get interviewed by the judge, and it will be more on knowledge than the actual bird. It’ll be a little different that way.”

There will be posters where the birds would normally be in the rabbit and poultry barn.

“Not having poultry makes it more complicated,” Hook said.

Despite the lack of the actual birds, there will be a chicken clucking contest on opening day and a chicken costume contest on Sunday.

“The poultry costume contest should be fun,” Hook said. “They are encouraged to be creative on their interpretation of the bird in the class. No live birds will be allowed, but they’re still going to do the costume contest just as we’ve done in the past. The costume contest for all the different projects are always more of a fun thing for exhibitors. It’s fun to see the creativeness of the kids.”

Delaware County’s Junior Fair has a mix of livestock projects and non-livestock projects, and some of the exhibitors have already won Skillathon contests at the Ohio State Fair.

“Our Delaware County 4-Hers are really pretty bright,” Hook said. “Kids like learning and staying active, and that’s what we offer. It’s a way for kids to stay active through the summer and learn.”
