The Delaware County Engineer’s Office hosted an open house recently to present information and receive comments on proposed improvements to the intersections of Lewis Center, Worthington and Rome Corners roads.

Safety and traffic flow improvements to the intersection of Lewis Center/Worthington Road and Lewis Center/Rome Corners Road are under review, with traffic signal and roundabout alternatives being considered.

Three large illustrations were presented during the Sept. 8 open house, showing the intersection signaled, the intersection with a roundabout, and a no-build illustration. If a signal or roundabout option were approved, the $1.5 million project would extend about one-quarter mile in each direction of the intersections.

The Delaware County engineer’s website indicates a design engineering phase through 2016, right of way acquisition in 2017-18, utility relocation in 2018, and construction starting in 2018.

Project manager Ryan Mraz of the Delaware County Engineer’s Office said the county would team with the Ohio Department of Transportation to fund the project; and final cost depends on the design, feasibility study costs and right of way acquisition.

One home and several properties near the intersection could suffer from eminent domain, depending on final design selection.

Frank Dantonio, a candidate for Genoa Township trustee in the November election, said he was not happy with either alternative presented at the open house.

“I think there’s a lot cheaper alternates that need to be explored before spending $1.5 million,” Dantonio said. “And I would like to see a solution without eminent domain.”
