The Delaware Board of Education will discuss the school district’s upcoming transition to a kindergarten through fifth-grade model at the elementary schools at a work session Monday night.

The work session will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the district’s administration building located at 248 N. Washington St.

The district currently instructs kindergarten through fourth grade at its five elementary schools; fifth and sixth grades are taught at Willis Intermediate School and seventh and eighth grades are taught at Dempsey Middle School.

The district has been undergoing a number of construction projects in the last year designed to allow the elementary schools to host kindergarten through fifth grade and to move sixth-graders to Dempsey.

When the district moves to the new model, Willis will be closed.

Superintendent Paul Craft will be giving a presentation on the overall transition plan and some of the planning factors involved at today’s meeting

Assistant Superintendent Heidi Kegley will give a presentation regarding transitioning music classes in the new model and district athletic director Steve Glesenkamp will discuss athletic considerations.

Julie Germann and Dan Bartha, the principal and assistant principal at Dempsey, will discuss issues specific to Dempsey.

Craft will also discuss next steps for the district.

The board will also consider approving a small number of staffing changes.
