A group of Delaware Area Career Center Digital Design students were given an Emmy award over the summer by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television and Sciences for their work on a commercial they created for Del-Co Water.

The students, all seniors, were approached last spring by Del-Co Water, who asked them to create a commercial explaining what Del-Co Water is and how their process works, according to Jeff Butcher, a Thomas Worthington High School students and one of the writers and photographers involved in the project.

The other students involved in the project were Connor McGovern,, who served as a director, photographer, editor, and writer for the video; Nathaniel Martin, who also served as a director, photographer, writer; Jake Marzluf, who served as the director of animation; Garrett Varanelli, who worked on the project as a photographer and animator; Andrew Chope, who composed the music and Aidan Garling, who provided the voice-over for the commercial.

The commercial runs three minutes and 18 seconds and is a virtual tour of the Del-Co Water treatment plant. The video also takes the viewer through the water treatment process, step-by-step and features fact bubbles and animations.

Butcher said the group of students spent three days at the plant conducting interviews and shooting video for the project.

After the video was completed McGovern, a Marburn Academy senior, was browsing his emails when he was asked if he or anyone else in his group had considered submitting the video to a local Emmy Program.

After submitting the commercial the team was nominated for best commercial in the High School Student Production category.

McGovern didn’t tell his classmates that he had submitted the video for the award until he learned they were nominated.

“I was really shocked,” Martin said.

Butcher, McGovern, Varanelli, Martin and Chope went to a ceremony in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, where they received the award.

The students said the award will be beneficial as they move forward with their careers after high school.

“It’s good for resumes and for getting out name out there,” Marzluf said.

The students plan to work on more projects this year and hope to submit more videos for awards consideration.

The video can be found on YouTube and is titled “Del-Co Water: A Visual Tour.”
