55-year-old bowling alley up for sale

The Delaware Lanes bowling center is up for sale as the family that founded the business prepares to move onto the next chapter of its life.

The 14,896-square-foot facility, 536 Sunbury Road, was built on about four acres in 1961 by Donald and Doris Baxter; and Odus and Betty Baxter, according to Debra Baxter-Connor, Donald and Doris’ daughter.

“It was my father that really loved this business,” Debra said.

Donald died about 23 years ago.

He and Doris bought Odus and Betty’s portion of the business in 1984, the same year William Havens purchased a stake in the bowling center, Debra said.

The bowling center features a cocktail lounge, snack bar, party room and 16 lanes of opportunity to knock down some pins with a relatively heavy ball, both competitively and recreationally.

“It’s a very good business,” she said.

Doris will turn 92 years old in January, Debra added.

“It’s time for us to move on,” she said. “We’ve been talking about it for several years.”

The family hopes to sell the business to someone who will continue the tradition in a similar manner.

“It’s not every day that a bowling alley comes up for sale, especially one with as much history as Delaware Lanes,” said city spokesman Lee Yoakum. “We are ready to assist any prospective buyer in any way we can.”
