Students from Sakata are expected to arrive near the end of this month in the city of Delaware, which is working on its own trip this spring to the sister city in Japan.

All 20 students from Sakata will be hosted when they arrive on Oct. 28 and have a long day of activities at Dempsey Middle School and throughout central Ohio.

“We’re very excited to be maintaining this cultural exchange for close to 20 years now,” said Dan Bartha, a member of the city’s Sister City Advisory Board, during a Tuesday meeting. “It’s a quick visit,” as students will be leaving the following Tuesday or Wednesday, he said.

The city’s has tentatively planned to send a delegation to Sakata from April 13 to April 22.

City manager Tom Homan said it will need to be determined soon of who will represent Delaware. Homan said he and Mayor Carolyn Kay Riggle are interested in attending.

Rand Guebert, chairman of the board, said he’s been to Japan numerous times and like to see people who have not gone to Japan part of the delegation.

“I think that would be great if people who have not gone to Japan can be a part of this delegation,” he said.

Homan expressed interest in having representation from Delaware schools and the Delaware Area Chamber of Commerce as part of the delegation.
