A Delaware man was sentenced to three years of community control in connection with an April shooting in Orange Township.
Isaiah Steele, 21, of 21 Darlington Road, Delaware, appeared in Delaware Municipal Court on Sept. 26, where he entered a guilty plea to a charge of assault, a first-degree misdemeanor and was sentenced to three years of community control and 180 days in jail.
However, Steele was credited the 124 days he has spent in the jail since his arrest on April 13 and the remaining 56 days were suspended.
Steele was sentenced on the charges fighting a group of Orange Township teenagers along with two Columbus adults, Terrance Jewell, 20, and Kayle Cantrell, 20, near a park on Blue Holly Drive.
Prosecutors said during the fight Jewell punched 19-year-old Maura Burlew, Steele assaulted 19-year-old Pierce Yukowski-Gray and Cantrell assaulted a 17-year-old girl and took her phone. During the fight, Yukowski-Gray was shot several times, prosecutors said at the arraignments for the group. He has since been released from the hospital.
Steele was originally charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, which carries a firearm specification that could add additional prison time if Steele is convicted; improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation/in a school safety zone, a second-degree felony; receiving stolen property, a fourth-degree felony; and tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.
These charges were dismissed after Steele pleaded guilty to the assault charge in Municipal Court.
Steele was the last member of the group to be sentenced.
Jewell appeared in Delaware County Common Pleas Court in September and was sentenced to three years in prison for a charge of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors.
As part of the agreement with prosecutors a charge of robbery, a second-degree felony and a charge of theft, a first-degree misdemeanor were dismissed.
Jewell is serving his sentence at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio.
Cantrell appeared in Delaware Municipal Court on Sept. 9 where she pleaded guilty to assault and theft and was given 45 days in jail by Delaware Municipal Judge Marianne Hemmeter. Cantrell was taken into custody after the sentencing and credited the 28 days she had spent in jail.
She completed her sentenced at the end of September.
The trio were originally indicted by a grand jury on April 22 and were all originally scheduled to stand trial on June 21, but the trial was delayed. The cases were later severed and three trials were scheduled.
