Process to replace Ryan starts today; Tiberi seeking chairmanship

The process of choosing a new Ways and Means Committee chairman in the U.S. House of Representatives is set to begin today, according to various media outlets.

Delaware County’s congressman, Pat Tiberi, is in the running.

Both CQ Roll Call and Politico reported late Monday that the House Republican Steering Committee will meet today to choose the successor to Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, who vacated the Ways and Means Committee’s top post after he was elected speaker of the House.

Tiberi and Texas Rep. Kevin Brady are competing for the committee chairman’s position. Both are friends and allies of Ryan.

Brady is second in seniority on the committee. He is currently chairman of the health subcommittee.

Tiberi is fourth in seniority and chairs the trade subcommittee. Tiberi enjoys a close relationship with fellow Ohioan and former Speaker John Boehner.

The steering committee, described as a “secretive panel,” chooses committee assignments. The group of 33 representatives will hear presentations from both Brady and Tiberi before selecting the new chairman. Ryan has five votes on the committee. Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-California, has two votes.

In a letter sent to members of the Ways of the Means Committee last week, Tiberi outlined what his goals would be if elected chairman. His plan includes “fixing our federal transportation infrastructure system,” “taking the next steps to advance free trade” and “leading the fight for comprehensive tax reform.”

“Once we’ve cleared these immediate hurdles, we must move forward in developing the bold solutions that America needs,” Tiberi wrote. “I have a vision for a Ways and Means Committee that leads in moving pro-growth tax reform and tax relief for individuals, families and employers, while also advancing Medicare, Social Security and welfare reforms. Delivering the message and doing the work on these once-in-a-generation issues will require the time, talent and commitment of every member of our committee.”
