A Delaware man was arrested and charged with his eighth OVI Monday night after a crash on Central Avenue.

City of Delaware Police report that at approximately 9:07 p.m. a crash was reported at the intersection of East Central Avenue and Grace Street. Police learned that a 2007 Toyota Highlander struck a utility pole, snapping it and then pull onto a nearby side street.

David Joseph Hilt, 48, of 2000 U.S. 23 North, Lot 11, Delaware, was driving the SUV and was on scene when police arrived. However, during the investigation, police began to believe that Hilt was under the influence of alcohol. Hilt refused to take a breathalyzer test.

Police report that Hilt was already driving under a suspended license and he was taken into custody and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and failure to control. Hilt was then taken to the Delaware County Jail.

Police report Hilt has seven previous OVI convictions dating back to 2001. He was charged with felony OVI as a result of this incident.

Hilt appeared in Delaware Municipal Court Tuesday morning where his bond was set at $50,000 by Judge Marianne Hemmeter. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 29 at 4 p.m.

Hilt was in the Delaware County Jail Tuesday.
