A local officer in the Delaware Police Department will be given a “Hometown Hero” award Saturday.

Officer Adam Graham will be presented the award by Modern Woodmen of America this Saturday at the Starbucks located at 1740 Columbus Pike at 9 a.m.

Amanda Mowry, a financial representative from Modern Woodmen of America, said Graham is receiving the award for taking on the responsibilities of a police canine unit.

“[Graham] exemplifies what it means to love their community and the people,” Mowry said. “Going above and beyond to make our world a better place. Adam has recently taken on the role of our new canine handler for the [Delaware police] department. The new canine unit was a big deal but he was on the ground floor of starting the basketball clinic.”

Mowry said the basketball clinic is a community outreach program run by the police department where officers play and coach local kids.

“I see him out and about and people just know him” Mowry said. “People, especially the kids, recognize him and are happy to see him.”

Graham will be working with the newest police dog, Ollie, who will also be attending the event Saturday.

Mowry said Modern Woodmen will also make a donation of $100 to Get Behind The Badge, a charity that aids the families of fallen law enforcement officers, in Graham’s name.

The event is open to the public.

“It’s a chance to meet him and see he’s just an average guy doing great work in our city,” Mowry said.

Mowry said he was nominated for the award by several people and was a front-runner throughout the process.
