Rec levy funds on committee agenda

The city of Delaware has more than a half a million dollars in remaining levy funds for parks and recreation projects.

The city has $533,288 left over from the levy approved in 2008 to build the Delaware Community Center YMCA and improve city parks.

“The remaining funds are a combination of excess funds from projects being completed under budget and planned projects that may need to be re-evaluated,” said Ted Miller, city parks and natural resources director, in a memo to City Manager Tom Homan.

The Delaware Recreation Levy Sub-Committee will discuss what to do with the remaining funds Monday.

Projects that may require re-evaluation include $150,000 in improvements for Mingo Park’s indoor facility and $286,000 for park irrigation at Smith and Veterans parks.

The Spray and Play at Veterans has $68,414 in proposed enhancements: a shade structure and concrete pad; park sign with the city’s logo; central plaza enhancements; electrical service outlet installation; and expanded playground entrance.

In addition, the Delaware Community Coalition is pursuing the basketball courts to be installed at Blue Limestone Park. Programming includes fundamental basketball lessons, 3-on-3 tournaments, league play and an adult league.

A memo, from Miller and Delaware Police Chief Bruce Bruce Pijanowski, said the coalition is prepared to provide financial support for the endeavor.

It said: “The coalition is prepared to assist in the installation of the courts at Blue Limestone Park, and will fund raise with the goal of sponsoring the installation of the poles, backboards, rims and nets which is estimated at $16,000.00.”

Total costs for the courts are about $244,400.

In addition, there are other potential projects under consideration:

• Mingo: Pool deck improvements and addition of new lights; building renovations; and making pedestrian access safer.

• New basketball court at Cheshire Park for about $20,000.

• New Park on Ross Street for about $100,000.

• Install a consistent brand image for the city’s park signage.

The committee will meet at City Hall, 1 S. Sandusky St., 6 p.m. in council chambers.
