A Fredericktown woman has died as a result of a seven-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon in Delaware County.

Dead is Suzanne R. Baird, 62.

The crash occurred about 4:50 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 36 at the intersection of Condit Road in Trenton Township, according to the Delaware post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers described the accident this way:

Baird was driving a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee west on U.S. 36. Also traveling west on U.S. 36 behind Baird was Gary K. Clark, 62, of Centerburg, driving a 2003 Honda Odyssey, and George H. Vance Jr., 36, of Centerburg, driving a 2012 Toyota RAV4.

Mrs. Baird attempted to make a left turn onto Condit Road and failed to yield to a 1997 Volvo W900 dump truck that was eastbound on U.S. 36. The dump truck was operated by Nathan C. Shellenbarger, 57, of Mount Vernon. The dump truck struck Mrs. Baird’s vehicle, forcing it back and into Clark’s vehicle and Vance’s vehicle before coming to rest in the road. After the impact with Baird’s vehicle, the dump truck went off the right side of the road and struck three unoccupied parked cars at the Northstar Automotive parking lot.

Baird suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. No injuries were reported by Vance, Clark or Shellenbarger.

Baird was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash, troopers said.

Alcohol or drug use is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, they said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, BST&G and Porter Kingston fire departments and Delaware County EMS.
