The community is invited to “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” at downtown Delaware’s May 5 First Friday event to raise awareness and funds to support domestic violence awareness and prevention.

The 9th annual walk is organized by the Delaware County Coalition of Victim Services and Main Street Delaware, with sponsorship from Terra Nova Community Church, 425 S. Sandusky St., Delaware, and from Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Delaware, 2815 Stratford Road, Delaware.

The walk is free and open to everyone, but participants are encouraged to wear high heels for the mile-long march. Registration begins at 6 p.m., with the walk starting at 7 p.m. at the intersection of South Sandusky and William streets.

The event is intended to open up discussion about sexual violence and to highlight agencies in place to help victims.

“The Walk a Mile event is a playful opportunity to raise awareness about sexualized violence toward women,” organizers said. “It opens up discussion and identifies those agencies in place to help victims. It’s the community taking a stand together to stop the violence, and literally, ‘walk a mile in her shoes.’” For more information, visit: www.walkamileinhershoes.org.

To support the crowd of walkers and other guests, additional free First Friday parking will be available at both the Delaware Police Department, 70 N. Union St., and at Delaware County’s Hayes Administration Building, 140 N. Sandusky St.

In addition to the walk, Main Street Delaware’s May 5 First Friday will feature a disc jockey and music provided by GCJ Technology, free Kona Ice samples, and more. Many stores and restaurants will be open late for the event.
