Preservation Parks sets May activities

A hound hike, spring bird walk and Mother’s Day event are highlights of programs offered in May by Preservation Parks of Delaware County. All of these programs are free, and do not require advance registration; most are for all ages but age limits for two of them are noted.

• Saturday, May 6, 10 a.m. Good Ol’ Gourds. Gourds have been used for everything from drinking vessels to musical instruments. Learn about growing gourds, the many varieties available, and some practical uses for these incredible fruits. Gallant Farm, 2150 Buttermilk Hill Road.

• Monday, May 8, 6 p.m. Hound Hike. Bring your canine friend for a walk with a naturalist. Dogs must be licensed and up-to-date on vaccinations. Deer Haven Park, 4183 Liberty Road.

• Sunday, May 14, 1-4 p.m. Moments with Mom: A Mother’s Day Adventure. Bring the family to enjoy a walk along a memory lane trail, create a Mother’s Day gift, plant a tree and enjoy a picnic snack. Emily Traphagen Park, 5094 Seldom Seen Road.

• Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and Sunday, May 21, noon-4 p.m. Railroad Fun. Watch the model trains travel through a miniature village, and learn a little about the history of railroading in America. Sandel Legacy Trail, 168 S. Vernon St.

• Saturday, May 27, 8 a.m. Spring Bird Walk. Don’t miss this early morning spring hike led by park district staff. All skill levels are welcome, and loaner binoculars are available. Ages 7 and older. Gallant Woods Park, 2151 Buttermilk Hill Road.

• Wednesday, May 31, 6:30 p.m. Gallant Farm Book Club. Read The Contrary Farmer, by Gene Lodsdon, and come prepared for a lively discussion. Ages 14 and older. Gallant Farm, 2150 Buttermilk Hill Road.
