A New York City man faces several felony charges after a skirmish with a Sunbury police officer last Friday.

Sunbury Police officers were called to the Sprint store at 101 W. Cherry St. April 28 at 7:20 p.m., for a person attempting to charge the purchase of two iPhones to an account with fraudulent documents.

Upon arrival, Officer Alison Castrilla began talking to the male who was attempting to obtain the iPhones. Shortly after asking for identification, he fled the store on foot but was stopped quickly in the parking lot by Castrilla and both ended up on the ground, a news release states.

As Castrilla and the man began to wrestle on the ground, two Good Samaritans of Sunbury came to Castrilla’s aid. The man was taken into custody.

Castrilla and the suspect, identified as Sammie L. Carter of The Bronx, were taken to the hospital, treated and released.

The Delaware County Grand Jury handed down indictments for the following charges: Assault, fourth-degree felony; obstructing official business; fifth-degree felony; forgery, a fifth-degree felony; and identity fraud, a fifth-degree felony.

Carter attempted to do this at other Sprint stores before coming to Sunbury.

“We are asking if anyone was in the area at that time and witnessed the male exiting a vehicle prior to going into the Sunbury Sprint store to contact us at 740-965-1411. We are still actively seeking other suspects involved in this case,” the department said.

Several law enforcement agencies assisted in the case.

Police thanked the good Samaritans — Sean Banal and Kenneth Bateson — for assisting the officer. Both will be officially recognized by the Mayor and the Council on May 31 at the Sunbury Village Council meeting.
