City to dedicate DiGenova Way

The name of late Councilman Joe DiGenova will be a fixture for years to come.

The city of Delaware will have a dedication ceremony this weekend for the renaming of Veterans Drive to DiGenova Way. City Council approved the change in late March, a week after their colleague died after being ill for several months.

The street is home to the Ohio National Guard Training Center, Delaware Community Center YMCA and Veterans Memorial Plaza, which opened on Memorial Day last year.

DiGenova, a Vietnam Air Force veteran and a Bronze star recipient, was the driving force behind the memorial.

DiGenova served on council for about 25 years, the most combined years in city history. During that time he served on six different boards or commissions; as council’s liaison to the municipal court and Delaware schools; and worked with four city managers, eight mayors and 24 council members.

Council appointed Jim Browning to replace DiGenova as the 3rd Ward’s representative. He will run for election this November and, if successful, would serve the term until November 2019.

The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday.
