Longtime Delaware resident Jane Hawes has been named communications manager for Delaware County commissioners.

Commissioners announced the appointment on Thursday.

The competitive vetting process drew 39 applicants from throughout central Ohio, county officials said.

Hawes brings to the position extensive writing, design, strategic marketing and communications experience, they said.

In May 2010, she was hired as editor of Columbus Parent Magazine, charged with directing the redesign and relaunch of the magazine. She was responsible for leading and managing a team of writers, photographers, production designers, web producers and interns.

Before that position, Hawes worked for nearly 10 years as a contract correspondent for the Columbus Dispatch Printing Co.

In addition to a master’s degree in telecommunication arts from the University of Michigan, Hawes also holds a master’s degree in business administration from Georgetown University and an undergraduate degree in communication arts from Villanova University. She has volunteered at various nonprofits and area schools.

Commission President Barb Lewis said: “Today we are appointing a very accomplished and respected journalist to serve as our communications manager. Jane knows Delaware County well and is already an active member of our community. In fact, she lives right up the street. I warmly welcome her to the county’s leadership team and very much look forward to working with her in the years to come.”

Hawes will begin her work with the county on Feb. 10.
