Conservation at the Delaware County Fair

0

It’s September which means the Delaware County Fair! This year our fair display will highlight the many products and conveniences we enjoy in our daily lives that come from agriculture. Visit us at the conservation park located next to the pig and lamb barn for some or all of these entertaining and educational family activities:

• Buckeye necklaces are back by popular demand for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17. Cheer on your Ohio State Buckeyes with your own colorful creation of buckeyes and beads.

• New this year on Saturday — the portable Outdoor Adventure Climbing Wall from the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. Answer a question at our conservation wheel to earn a ticket to get your thrill scaling the wall. This event will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16 and is sponsored by Field and Stream.

• The Ohio Division of Wildlife is returning with its archery trailer on Saturday and Sunday, a big hit in past years and we expect it to be so again. Beginners are welcome!

• The volunteers from Johnstown Community Sportsman’s Club will join us with their inflatable BB gun range on Monday and Tuesday, 3 to 7 p.m. This was loads of fun last year and the volunteers from Johnstown provide excellent instructions for newbies of any age.

• My personal favorite is returning, the Cabela’s outdoor cooking demonstration. Enjoy free samples of delicious treats such as ice cream cone s’mores, jalapeno bacon wrapped pork loin, and chicken stir fry. The food is prepared to absolute perfection on camp stoves, with charcoal in cast iron pots and pans, and on mini grills. Cabela’s staff will be on hand to share their cooking expertise and discuss their equipment, accessories, and spice mixes.

• Last year we experimented with a Sunday evening family movie and had many requests to do so again. The movie is sponsored by Ohigro and begins at 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 17. Sit on a straw bale with a s’more, snow cone, or popcorn snack and a relax with friends and family. The movie, Home on the Range, is suitable for kids of all ages.

• New this year will be a short awards ceremony prior to the family movie. Join us at 7 p.m. on Sunday to learn who will be recognized for their outstanding service as the Conservation Educator of the Year, the Conservation Booster of the Year, and the Farmer of the Year.

• Another new event will be hosted by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Staff and local participants in several USDA programs will be on hand to share their experiences and answer questions.

• Other fair festivities include Jumbo Jenga, conservation crafts, the soil tunnel, conservation games, the dig box, and the competitive rubber duck races over the waterfalls.

A complete schedule of events can be printed from our website at www.delawareswcd.org. We would love to see you at the 2017 Delaware County Fair.
