The fall festivities will commence with a little extra cheer during October’s First Friday.

The monthly community celebration in downtown Delaware will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 6. Sandusky Street will be shut down between Spring Street and Winter Street to accommodate the numerous fun filled activities being offered by Main Street Delaware and the Delaware Fire Department.

“The Delaware Fire Department already has a close relationship with the members of Main Street Delaware,” said Inspector Bill Jones. “We always enjoy supporting our community … getting the chance to interact with the community in non-emergency situations is always fun for us.”

Firefighters will be staging a live burn and rescue demonstration, an exhibit of fire fighting equipment and a fire safety seminar, complete with kid friendly drills and fire gear training.

Additionally, a rappelling and aerial demonstration will be displayed using several buildings in the downtown district.

“We will have several activities, including Stop, Drop and Roll, vehicle extrication demonstrations (Jaws of Life), kid’s firefighter helmet and sticker giveaway,” Jones stated. “… plenty of firefighters and inspectors (will be) available to answer any questions.”

Free pumpkins will also be provided by MadMax Farms, which is based out of Powell. The farm, run by the Neimeyer family, donates all proceeds made to local children’s charities in honor of their son Maxwell, who passed away in 2004 after battling a neurological disorder.

The Strand Theatre is hosting an after-hours trivia competition for adults and will show the “1988 classic non-Christmas Christmas movie” “Die Hard,” starring Bruce Willis. Admission to the trivia contest is free. Tickets for the film cost $5 each and include a box of popcorn.

While the streets bustle with autumnal revelry and Bruce Willis is spreading his brand of Christmas cheer on the silver screen, Ohio Wesleyan University will open the doors of the Richard M. Ross Museum to the public. At dusk, a 12-minute video, “The Shadow We Cast,” will be shown in the museum, made using historical documents from the university and the Delaware County Historical Society.
