White nationalist suing OSU
COLUMBUS — An associate and organizer of campus tours for white nationalist Richard Spencer is suing Ohio State University after school officials refused to rent campus space for Spencer to speak.
The lawsuit was filed Sunday in federal court in Columbus. Ohio State officials said Friday the school had rejected the request for space after conferring with law enforcement authorities and considering Spencer’s University of Florida appearance Thursday.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Georgia State University graduate student and Spencer tour organizer Cameron Padgett. An Ohio State spokesman declined to comment Sunday about the lawsuit.
Similar lawsuits filed on behalf of Padgett are pending against Michigan State University and Penn State University claiming a violation of Spencer’s free speech rights.
The University of Cincinnati is allowing Spencer to speak.
Man critically wounded while hunting
TIFFIN — Authorities say a man has been critically wounded after being accidentally shot by a fellow squirrel hunter.
The Advertiser-Tribune reports the shooting occurred Saturday morning in woods in northwest Ohio’s Seneca County.
The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office says Marty McQuistion, of Tiffin, was hunting with another Tiffin man when he was shot in the upper chest with a shotgun. McQuistion was flown to a hospital in Toledo where he was listed in critical condition Saturday night.
A Seneca County sheriff’s deputy says the other hunter shot at a squirrel and fired a second round that struck McQuistion from about 50 feet away. Sheriff Bill Eckelberry says McQuistion’s friend was focused on the squirrel and didn’t know he was so close.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is investigating.
Journalist-authors to lead talk in Cincinnati
CINCINNATI — Two veteran journalists will lead a public conversation on race in America that highlights an Ohio school’s role in the Freedom Summer of 1964.
Miami University alumni Wil Haygood and Jeff Pegues speak Saturday at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.
Hundreds of young volunteers gathered in Oxford, Ohio, in June 1964 for training before heading south to help register black voters and establish schools and community centers along. Three volunteers were abducted in Mississippi and killed by white segregationists.
Haygood’s most recent book is “Showdown: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court Nomination That Changed America.” Pegues, a CBS News correspondent, recently released “Black and Blue: Inside the Divide Between Police and Black America.”
The center along the Ohio River opened in 2004.
Bee species added to endangered list
COLUMBUS — The addition of the rusty patched bumble bee to the list of state endangered species is one of several wildlife rule changes recently approved by the Ohio Wildlife Council.
The council also this week approved changes to sport fishing regulations. Those changes include exempting striped bass, hybrid striped bass and white bass taken from Pymatuning Lake from statewide bag and size limit regulations and removing the 15-inch minimum length limit on saugeye harvested from Lake Snowden.
Other changes include reducing the bag limit to four fish in the aggregate for channel and blue catfish harvested from Hoover Reservoir.
The Ohio Wildlife Council is an eight-member board that votes on all ODNR Division of Wildlife proposed rules and regulations and season dates after considering public input.
