Delaware Co. pays tribute to veterans this weekend

Delaware Countians will once again pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the various branches of the United States military.

A host of Veterans Day activities are planned throughout the county this weekend, including one that has become a tradition at Delaware Bible Church.

Rev. Scott Tiede said the church has been organizing a veterans recognition ceremony for about five years, inviting area veterans and military personnel and their families to attend. This year’s service is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the church.

Tiede said one of the highlights of the annual service is when the anthem for each branch of the military is played and veterans are asked to go to the stage to be recognized.

“By the time we get through all of those songs, our stage is just bursting, it’s just full of people,” Tiede said. “Both those who have served and those who have a loved one who is serving or who has fallen in the line of duty. It’s just a really moving time.”

Tiede said a display of military memorabilia will be set up in the foyer by Bob Groce. Mary Leavitt, “The Flag Lady,” will make a presentation. Representatives of Honor Flight are also scheduled to be part of the service.

“It’s just our small way of trying to bless those who have served and are serving in the Armed Forces,” Tiede said. “It’s a ‘thank you’ from us to our military community.”

Area veterans are invited to the service, Tiede said. Delaware Bible Church is located at 45 Belle Ave., Delaware. For information, visit www.delawarebible.org.
