A Lewis Center man was killed Thursday evening in a single vehicle crash in Orange Township.

Troopers from the Delaware Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported Friday that at approximately 11:15 p.m., John D. Schmittauer, a Lewis Center resident, was travelling northbound on South Old State Road. The post reported that Schmittauer’s Honda Civic travelled off the right side of the roadway, struck a mailbox and ditch.

Troopers said his vehicle overturned in the crash, and Schmittauer was transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital for treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Troopers report Schmittauer was wearing a seat-belt in the crash, and alcohol use is suspected to be a factor.

Next of kin has been notified.

The crash remains under investigation, the patrol reported Friday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Delaware County EMS and Orange Township Fire & EMS.
